If you find that Amazon has a good price. Then go through an Amazon ad on this website.

We've got one (one of the older larger ones). They are a good idea if you're going out in the big empty alone. I'd hate to have to use the 911 button for a variety of reasons and wouldn't do so unless I was well and truly F@#ked! Helicopter evacs can be very expensive.

The OK, checking in button is nice and locates you within a few yards to the email recipient.

Just Google around Dave, you may be able to find a good deal with purchase of yearly service like with cell phones. :Miner:

You can look into a used Sat phone or refurbished one. If you sign up with plan that is for emergency use only then you can avoid the costly monthly charges. I used a sat phone once to call for a tow when my ATV broke down out of cell range. A spot would not have been very useful then.

I think the spot is for life threatening situations in the main. It will send emails with predetermined messages (that you define) and a GPS determined location. Ours has an OK button which we used to send an email saying "I'm OK and here is where I'm at", a HELP button which sends a message that more or less says "I'm OK but I'm stuck, broke down or lost", and the 911 button which would trigger Search and Rescue.

Cell phone service in Nevada is improving, but there are still plenty of dead zones and it's nice to be able to transmit your exact location.

Someone has to be around to read the email messages though.

I did a search included the words "refurbished" also tried 'used'.
Came up with this one but I'm sure there are more. $399 isn't a bad price at all!!!

This is the cheapest I've seen: http://www.globalstar.com/en/index.php?cid=1250

You could pay as much for a smart phone and service.

But I know almost nothing about sat phones..........

Waiting for Bob to edumacate us.

First I have to edgumucate myself before I can edge-u-mu-kate anyone else.

I have this one: Globalstar GSP1600 Satellite Phone

I think it is the least expensive one you can buy. The thing is to demand an 'emergency use only' plan. That way you can pay $zero.00 per month otherwise the monthly fees will eat you up alive. I paid the monthly fee for at least a couple years before Brad helped me figure out how to demand the no fee plan. I complained about lost and dropped calls, sat coverage being sporadic etc, which it was a few years ago. I would say that with the economy the way it is they would be happy to sell one with this plan but who knows. If you only need it for emergencies then insist that is which plan you need and walk away if they won't give it to you. Brad had a bit more trouble finagaling them and had to keep telling them to just drop him before they finally consented. I didn't have as much trouble getting emergency use only. It's $1 per minute if I use it but you can talk fast in an emergency and if it's an emergency who cares at that point. I even got them to give me 50 free minutes of which I still have about 45 minutes left to use before I get billed.

Hope that helps :announce::

I have a older sat phone and I finally droped service a few years ago. I just never used it and I had a lot of trouble getting sat service, and droped calls. If you have a clear view of the sky with zero trees around you "might" get out, but not always. Again this phone is about 8 years old so the new ones might be a lot better. I just do not want, at the moment, to go out and spend a lot of cash for something I may never use. An emergency sending unit would be a lot better and I have found my cell phone works in a lot of places, if you can get high enogh to have a visual on a cell tower.

The Spot 2 Models are being recalled. Looks like the original ones are fine.
This recall does NOT involve the original SPOT Satellite Personal Tracker, just the second generation SPOT 2.
